Chloe Christina Smith, 25, of Swampscott, was riding with friends in Groton on Friday, June 5, when her horse balked at a jump, throwing her from the saddle before collapsing on top of her, according to her family and obituary.
Smith was airlifted to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where she died hours later, surrounded by loved ones, Daily Item reported.
“Her life was horses,” her father, Jim Smith, told the outlet. “That was her love.”
The tragedy came just weeks after Smith purchased a working horse farm in Berlin, fulfilling a goal she had spent years pursuing. Family members said she boarded 18 horses and other animals at the property while training riders.
“Most of us never get that chance, that special moment where life comes together, the wind is at your back, and you have everything you ever wanted right in front of you,” her father told the outlet.
Smith had only recently moved into the farmhouse when the accident happened.
“Her world was right there,” her father said.
Her obituary called the accident a “cruel twist of fate.”
The show horse she was riding also died after suffering a fatal neck injury in the fall.
Family members said Smith was passionate about social justice and equality. She also hoped to transform her farm into a gathering place for celebrations and community events.
Her mother, Abbe, told the Daily Item that Smith’s love of horses began during childhood summers spent at equestrian camps.
“She said she wanted to live there the rest of her life,” her mother told the outlet.
“She wanted to get married there.”
Her family will hold visiting hours from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday at Solimine Funeral Home in Lynn. Chloe Smith’s funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at Clifton Lutheran Church in Marblehead. Burial will follow in Lynn.
