Neighbors Reveal Troubling Arguments Before Hockey Rink Tragedy As New Details Emerge About Family Turmoil Surrounding Rhonda Dorgan’s Death — And What Witnesses Say They Heard In The Weeks Before The Shooting Is Now Shocking The Community

A mother-of-three was murdered alongside her child after her transgender ex-husband opened fire at a high school hockey game in Rhode Island.

Rhonda Dorgan, 52, was shot dead by her ex-husband Robert Dorgan – who also went by the name Roberta Esposito – at their son’s hockey game at the Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, a few miles outside Providence, on Monday afternoon.

Rhonda died at the indoor skating rink, while her son was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Two other family members and a family friend were injured in the shooting, WPRI reported.

Dorgan, 56, concluded the rampage by killing himself. His daughter told WCVB that after that, he had ‘mental health issues’ and was ‘very sick’.

A motive remained unclear Tuesday morning, but Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves believes it was targeted and stemmed from a family dispute.

Rhonda served Dorgan with divorce papers in 2020, according to their case file in Providence/Bristol County Family Court.

She initially cited Dorgan’s ‘gender reassignment surgery, narcissistic and personality disorder traits’ as grounds for divorce, according to court filings obtained by WPRI.

Those reasons were later crossed out and replaced with ‘irreconcilable differences which have caused the immediate breakdown of the marriage’. Their divorce was finalized in 2021.
